Milieu & Recovery Counselor

MJ is a recent UCSC graduate with a Bachelors in Psychology. Before coming to Lotus she enjoyed years of counseling, residential care and program planning experience with a wide array of diverse communities. Through working in rehabilitation centers,and university and senior citizen housing she was able to grow her mental health skills tool kit and implement compassion based care. She is committed to inclusive care and is honored to have counseled LGBTQIA+ youth; immigrant families; adolescents and adults in disordered eating, drug and alcohol recovery; neurodiverse families with children; and survivors of trauma of all ages. As a Recovery Counselor she hopes to continue to provide advocacy and assistance to under serviced/ supported communities.
As a survivor herself, she finds dignity in being an open book about her own recovery, citing transparency and connection as a focus in survivor centered treatment. She advocates for giving one to one support, ideally empowering folks to find their voice to be able to advocate for their own wants and needs. She believes her strength comes from a place of soft understanding, continued perseverance, and an unwavering belief in the possibilities in recovery.
MJ is a proud Queer person of color with a Latin/Hispanic heritage who feels deeply connected to living a vibrant and authentic life- promoting the same curiosity for life, as well as self-care and self-love practices to those around her. In her down time she spends as much time appreciating the outdoors as she can- enjoying peaceful walks in the forest, long swims and plenty of starlit dancing. She loves to dabble in many forms of creativity- anything from poetry and painting to fashion and balloon art.
